A sign of the times…

December 8, 2011

It’s no secret that the world appears to be going to hell in a hand basket. And yesterday, courtesy of a comment and post by two asshats I’ve come to the conclusion why…no self responsibility. Parents have too long filled their children with the thought that they are owed the world, and if they don’t get it, all they have to do is throw a tantrum until they get it. Look at the Occupy movement for a prime example of this in action, or rather, when children like this grow up (well, physically anyway). So in light of this, with this post I’m including some interesting views on this subject from various sources.

The difficulty we have in accepting responsibility for our behavior lies in the desire to avoid the pain of the consequences of that behavior. -M. Scott Peck

Most people do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility, and most people are frightened of responsibility.
… -Sigmund Freud

Punishment is now unfashionable… because it creates moral distinctions among men, which, to the democratic mind, are odious. We prefer a meaningless collective guilt to a meaningful individual responsibility. -Thomas Szasz

In the last analysis, the individual person is responsible for living his own life and for “finding himself.” If he persists in shifting his responsibility to somebody else, he fails to find out the meaning of his own existence. -Thomas Merton
